Simple and Inexpensive Custom Color Gobos with the Source Four LED

With the holidays upon us, one of the most powerful ways to use lighting at an event is to project gobo patterns onto walls, drapes, the floor—just about any surface. It's an instant eye-catcher—when guests walk into an event space, gobo patterns are often among the first things they notice. Whether it's a company logo written in light, a branded holiday message or an abstract pattern that fades smoothly from one color to another, a projected gobo pattern is a great way to amplify your brand, make a statement or strike just the right mood or atmosphere at your event.

The Source Four LED Lustr+ lets you:

Print custom gobo patterns on acetate with a color laser printer—no more expensive glass gobos!

Easily and economically print multiple versions of a custom design, or make corrections or revisions as needed

Select preset color-changing sequences right from the back of the fixture

Choose from an almost infinite range of built-in colors—no more relying on color filters

Daisy-chain several Source Four LEDs—use only one power cable

Do all this without any extra equipment

What makes gobo patterns even more dazzling is when there's color involved. Depending on your budget, just about any color image can be projected with a gobo, from a single-color logo to a full-color photo. Even better is when the projected image is custom-made. While the major gobo manufacturers—Rosco, GAM and Apollo—have thousands of outstanding pre-made gobo patterns to choose from, there's sometimes no substitute for creating a custom image that serves your specific need and fits your unique vision for your event.

However, as powerful as custom gobos can be, there have traditionally been some drawbacks to using them. Because of the heat generated by incandescent lighting fixtures, multicolor images have to be coated onto glass. Not only is this an expensive process—especially for what is a typically single-use item—but the gobo has to be ordered days or weeks in advance. And once the order is placed, the process doesn't allow much room for revisions or corrections after the fact.

Even with steel gobos, in which light is projected through a cut-out stencil pattern, as soon as you want to introduce any kind of color, it requires, at the very least, a color gel filter (and you would have to know exactly which color to order), or on the other extreme, an extra accessory (e.g. SeaChanger) with a separate control system—all with their own power requirements—to create the kind of programmed color-changing effects you want.

All of these problems are now a thing of the past, thanks to the new ETC Source Four LED.

The Source Four LED introduces several innovations that make it easier and more cost-effective than ever to project exactly the kind of gobo image you want—with exactly the kinds of colors you want—at your next event.

    Low Heat Output

One of the most groundbreaking features of the Source Four LED is its low heat output. Even after the fixture has been on for hours, it remains relatively cool to the touch. This means that a color gobo pattern no longer has to be coated onto glass—the image can now be printed on acetate from a standard color laser printer for a fraction of the cost of a glass gobo. Not sure which version of an image to use? Print all the various versions of the image onto acetate, then try out each version in the fixture itself. Notice an error in the image after you've printed it? Simply correct the error, reprint it onto acetate and you're good to go.

    x7 Color System™

Want to add color-changing effects to your gobo pattern? The Source Four LED Lustr+ comes with ETC's patented Selador® x7 Color System™, which not only allows you to choose from a virtually infinite range of colors right on the spot (no more guessing in advance which color filters to purchase), but which also allows you to change from one color to another without any extra equipment or power needs. The Lustr+ comes with several preset color changing sequences which you can select right from the back of the fixture.

    Daisy-Chain Multiple Fixtures

The innovative Source Four LED can also be daisy-chained, allowing all the fixtures along the chain to be programmed from the back of a single unit and powered by a single cable. This is highly useful and convenient if you want to project multiple gobos from multiple fixtures at your event.
